Arnold Circus

Tower Hamlets Liveable Streets programme, aimed to improve the look and feel of roads and public spaces throughout the borough – to create a network of active travel-friendly, low traffic zones that deliver improved accessibility, impactful greening, improved lighting and public art and reduce the fear of crime.

In developing the scheme at Arnold Circus our consideration and research focussed on the qualities of the existing infrastructure of Boundary Gardens and the Boundary Estate – its layout, geometry, buildings, features and materials, and cultural and social fabric. This was balanced with the measures to improve accessibility and active travel permeability.

Our approach was driven by the following core principles:

+ Ensuring the unique local character and historic fabric is respected and to reflect the contemporary needs and desires of the local community

+ Creating a socially engaged public realm with an improved streetscape accessible to all.

+ An adapted streetscape prioritising walking and cycling.

+ New green and blue infrastructure that enhances local biodiversity and offers stewardship to the local community.

+ Enabling a connecting place that accommodates complementary spaces for relaxation, recreation, and social events and to enjoy nature.
